John Buchanan
As Vice president of Sustainable Production, John Buchanan leads the Sustainable Food and Agriculture Markets team within Conservation International's Center for Sustainable Lands and Waters. The Sustainable Food & Agriculture Markets team focuses on engaging leading companies in food, retail and agribusiness sectors to develop and implement sustainable agriculture strategies. These strategies link commodity supply chains to agricultural landscape and jurisdictional initiatives, combining sustainable production with protection of critical natural capital. John is also responsible for CI relationships with leading companies in the food and agriculture value chain. John sits on the Global Steering Committee of the SourceUp initiative as well as the Steering Committee of the Good Growth Partnership, a Global Environment Facility-funded initiative to reduce deforestation in global commodity supply chains. He previously served on the Board of Governors of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil, as a Co-organizer of the Landscapes for People Food and Nature Initiative and 4 years on the Steering Committee of the Keystone Field to Market Initiative. John has been with CI since 1997. Previously, he worked for six years in the food packaging industry. John has a degree in political science and French from Washington and Lee University. He is fluent in Spanish.
